There is no way to improve on football beyond the unbalanced line single-wing — Carl Snavely Among coaches, single-wing football denotes a formation using a long snap from center as well as a deceptive scheme that evolved from Glenn “Pop” Warner ‘s offensive style. Traditionally, the single-wing was an offensive formation that featured a core of four backs including a tailback, a fullback, a quarterback blocking back , and a wingback. Linemen were set “unbalanced”, or simply put, there were two linemen on one side and four on the other side of the center. This was done by moving the off-side guard or tackle to the strong side. The single-wing was one of the first formations attempting to trick the defense instead of over-powering it. Pop Warner referred to his new offensive scheme as the Carlisle formation because he formulated most of the offense while coaching the Carlisle Indians. The term single-wing came into widespread use after spectators noticed that the formation gave the appearance of a wing-shape. In , Warner coached at Carlisle, a school for Native Americans, where his legacy consisted of at least three significant events.
As we all know, alignments are only part of defending an offense, the technique that is applied is the key element in attacking an offense. This is simple though, if the Sam has a wing to his side, he spills, if there is no wing, he forces, and contain rushes against the pass. The main coaching point for the Sam is getting off the ball, and getting flat down the LOS.
In fact, the last NFL team to use the single wing offense was the Pittsburgh Steelers in Currently, this old-time offense usually only rears its head at the high school and youth levels. Currently, this old-time offense usually only rears its head at the high school and youth levels.
At one time, a direct snap to one formation or another was the most popular offensive system. The Single Wing was last run in the NFL by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the year Curly Lambeau of the Packers switched over to the T-formation , under famed Coach Jock Sutherland, who compiled a NFL record with it; and although it lasted into the early s at the college level, it is now all but extinct there. Versions of the Single Wing are, however, still being run successfully by a small but devoted band of high school coaches all over the country, and what is nowadays popularly called the “Shotgun” a term first given to a formation “introduced” in by Red Hickey of the 49ers is related to one or more of the formations below.
Bear in mind that the diagrams below are just a representative sample, and bear in mind also that each of the formations shown is capable of several mutations. For anyone wanting to explore the subject in serious depth, the foremost authority on the history of Single Wing football is Ed Racely, of Atherton, California. The deep back could spin and hand off to either wingback. The line is unbalanced to one side, the backfield to the other. Owen claimed that it combined the speed and deception of the “T” formation with the power of the single wing. The rules were changed, eventually, to require a full-second stop after a shift. Note the “nasty splits” by the ends. This is the direct-snap version of my Double-Wing, nicknamed the “Wildcat” set in honor of the mascot at the school where I first ran it.
I would like to thank Adam for asking me to write this article for Direct Snap. Adam asked me to write about the switch to 8-man football and our 8-man single wing offense. We run the spin series almost entirely with some direct snap and buck lateral series as well. My first exposure to the single wing offense was during a football theory class at the University of Northern Iowa.

Ortega spent the past two seasons as the Wheaton Junior Varsity Coach and was promoted partly because of the outstanding job he had done at the lower level. After a winning season at in by the J.
The Wheaton Knights will be led by a close group of only a handful of seniors on the roster.

As time goes on any system requires innovation because defensive systems and coordinators get accustomed to dealing with it. Just look at the typical DEHS coverages rolled out today- lots of teams base out of a 2-high safety look. It’s because many offenses today employ some version of 1 back offense and force teams to cover 4 vertical receivers immediately at the snap. If you don’t have the flexibility to deal with the different offenses you see you’re dead in the water.

Part of the rivalry is the close proximity of the schools, but also a big part of it is our communities are so much alike. Our kids are kind of like the Windber kids. Along with the fact that both schools have kind of a storied football history. I think all of those contribute. Windber coach Phil DeMarco said neither of those games matter now. Seth Zaman ran for yards and two scores.

I even created a spread shotgun version of the Wing T that proved to be highly successful for us the last 6 years that I coached Varsity. I took the 2. The rest of the headaches were not something I missed but the daily interaction with the players made me hungry to get back into coaching.

Historical[ edit ] This defense is generally considered to be the best balanced arrangement against a well balanced attack, Dana X. Bible , Championship Football, , p. This shows a refinement of the 8 man front, where the cornerback clamps tight on the wingback, presenting a de facto 9 man line to the single wing offense. Yellow triangles are linemen, yellow squares are linebackers, yellow circles are defensive backs. The is a defense that became popular in the s due to the demands of the improving passing attacks of the time.
In the early s, pro football’s passing rules were liberalized.

You will not split people out frequently, as you will rely on inside running. With this in mind, be sure that your players are prepared mentally and physically. They must be bought into the offense, and they must be ready to be tough. This offense is not like the Flex or the Spread Option offenses, in that it can easily be taught and run. It does not require reading, as the Snap Back doesn’t have anyone to run the option with, or it is not a good scheme.
Pulling your guards is always a good option, and running GT’s is actually possible. Running behind blockers is a benefit of this offense. You will not have long flashy plays, but you will suck up clock and keep your offense on the field. The Single Wing is slightly different in backfield alignment, as the diagrams show. The thing the diagrams do not show is that the SB and TB are both aligned on the center. The SB’s inside leg is on the center’s outside leg, and the same is true for the TB.
This means that your center must be talented when aiming and snapping the ball. This technique is very instrumental in many plays, since you want your SB to lead Double Lead plays to the strength.
