Single-grain OSL studies typically reveal significant intra- and inter-sample variability in quartz dose saturation properties at the individual grain level. This enhanced variability may offer the potential to obtain extended-range chronologies exceeding the traditional upper age limits of multiple-grain OSL dating. However, there have been relatively few detailed assessments of single-grain OSL properties over high dose ranges. In this study we investigate extended-range single-grain OSL dating potential at Cuesta de la Bajada, one of the most important Ancient Middle Palaeolithic sites in the Iberian Peninsula. A series of novel sensitivity tests are used to assess potential biases in supergrain De estimation over high dose ranges related to i thermally transferred signal contributions, ii choice of dose-response curve fitting function, and iii insufficient dose saturation properties of individual grains. These comparisons support the suitability of our single-grain OSL results and suggest there may be good potential for using quartz supergrains to establish extended-range chronologies at some Middle Pleistocene sites. Comparisons with other single-grain OSL studies across the Iberian central plains suggest that favourable dose saturation properties may be influenced by regional-scale geological controls. The importance of undertaking single-grain OSL dating at Cuesta de la Bajada is also demonstrated by the results of synthetic aliquot experiments, which reveal multiple-grain age offsets of 60— ka when unsuitable grain types are inadvertently included in the final age calculations.

A new statistical method for estimating divergence dates of species from DNA sequence data by a molecular clock approach is developed. This method takes into account effectively the information contained in a set of DNA sequence data. The molecular clock of mitochondrial DNA .

So to fill in some of the gaps, at least for autosomal DNA tests, let me introduce you to a wonderful website: The brainchild of Curtis Rogers and John Olson a distant DNA cousin of mine , Gedmatch offers a range of utilities that make it a little easier to extract every bit of potentially useful information out of your autosomal test results. It particularly helps you identify cousins with whom you can share research.

Gedmatch works with the raw results from deCODEme as well. And you can upload a GEDCOM with your family tree to see if you can identify common lines, using technology to help with traditional paper-trail genealogy too. You can choose to see information about selected matches in a chromosome browser. And there are several matrix displays available that will display your selected matches not only as they match you but as they match each other, including a very useful option for displaying estimated distance to the most recent common ancestor.

The chart does have email addresses, deleted here in this example showing matches I share with an uncle. You can phase data — if you and one or both of your parents have tested, this utility will help identify what portions of your DNA came from which parent. And there are six different options for displaying admixture ethnicity or deep ancestry data — and each of the six has options galore.

Over the generations, immigration has carried Islandmagee’s progeny to distant parts of the globe. Vikings made use of Larne Lough or “Wulfric’s Fjord”. In the late middle ages members of the clan Magee moved from the Hebrides to the peninsula inspiring the modern name. At Lough Larne, the peninsula of Islandmagee marks their early Ulster territory. The M’Ghies of Balmaghie View images of this Gallovidian article kb From the ninth century, when parishes got their names, and Balemakethe, now Balmaghie, was named after its principal landowner, until the nineteenth, when the daughters of John M’Ghie of Castlehill, who was descended from Balmaghie through Airie and Airds, parted with the estate, there have been landowners of the name and clan in Galloway.

The name M’Ghie is a modification of what was once a favourite Celtic appellation, Aodh or Aed, sometimes written Eth or Heth and latinized into Ethus.

Despite this growing list of known pheromones, researchers know little about the mechanism behind how pheromones actually work. In June, researchers found a male pheromone in mice enhances sexual behaviors in females, and at the same time enhance aggression in males.

The team of Japanese researchers based at the University of Tokyo identified specific neural circuits and neurons in mice that generate a particular behavioural response to specific chemical signals. In most animals, the sense of smells and sensory perception of other chemical stimuli play a critical role in controlling instinctive behaviors.

California is using war-zone DNA tests to identify fire victims It will cut the process from weeks down to just two hours. Authorities are using a DNA-testing technology typically employed in war zones to identify victims, instead of traditional DNA-analysis techniques. DNA analysis specialist firm ANDE will provide the on-the-field equipment, which it describes as a “lab in a box”, no bigger than an office printer, according to Bloomberg. The instrument can automatically process DNA and generate a genetic profile in two hours or less.

The ANDE team will compare DNA samples extracted from tissue and bone fragments collected by rescue workers on site against a reference database. This database will be built based on cheek swabs given by family members of those who are unaccounted for. It’s reportedly the first time the equipment — designed for use in places such as war zones or crime scenes where samples have to be processed quickly or a lab isn’t accessible — has been deployed at a natural disaster since ANDE’s founding in

An elderly Oregon man in a nursing home was nearly fingered as the Golden State Killer last year after investigators assigned to the sensational cold case tracked him down through a DNA genealogy website, it was reported Saturday. Those same investigators this week named an ex-cop as the killer after conducting a similar genetic search using commercially-available DNA websites, but without disclosing the misidentification, the Associated Press reported.

In March , an Oregon City police officer, working with the California investigators, obtained a court order directing the nursing home resident, a year-old man, to provide a DNA sample. The AP reported that the court documents say detectives used a genetic profile based off DNA from crime scenes linked to the serial killer and compared it to information on a free online genealogical site. Joseph James DeAngelo, 72, who authorities suspect is the “Golden State Killer” responsible for at least a dozen murders and 50 rapes in the s and 80s, appeared in court Friday.

AP Investigators targeted the Oregon man after finding that he shared a rare genetic marker with the killer, AP reported.

I haven’t written in this blog in a month and I feel terribly lazy. However, I’ve been terribly busy. Well all these wonderful DNA matches keep rolling in! It doesn’t help that Ancestry doesn’t have any way to look at the chromosome data so I can see where I match my matches. It doesn’t help that I can’t look at how my matches match others to see if there is a pattern. And it really doesn’t help that I can’t easily compare how many matches my cousin and I have in common.

I will start off with the warning that they are so backlogged with new uploads that they aren’t accepting any new ones until mid-August currently the 15th. But I’ve put off this post for so long, that I think it’s best to just let you know about all the features and let you get ready. So what does Gedmatch do that’s so special? Why will you be sitting on the edge of your chair waiting for August 15th?

Nov 11, , Dating apps are using artificial intelligence to suggest where to go on a first date, recommend what to say and even find a partner who looks like your favourite celebrity. Until recently smartphone dating apps — such as Tinder which lets you see in real time who is available and “swipe” if you wish to meet someone — left it up to users to ask someone out and then make the date go well. But to fight growing fatigue from searching through profiles in vain, the online dating sector is turning to artificial intelligence AI to help arrange meetings in real life and act as a dating coach.

These new uses for AI — the science of programming computers to reproduce human processes like thinking and decision making — by dating apps were highlighted at the four-day Web Summit which wraps up Thursday in Lisbon. Online dating pioneer eHarmony announced it is developing an AI-enabled feature which nudges users to suggest meeting in person after they have been chatting in the app for a while.

Loveflutter already suggests places to go on a first date that are equidistant from both people’s homes using information from Foursquare, an app that helps smartphone users find nearby restaurants, bars and clubs. Tinder founder Sean Rad said AI will “create better user experiences” and predicted iPhone’s Siri Voice assistant would in the future act as a matchmaker.

When you open the app, a soothing voice asks questions about what you like to do on a date or where you would like to travel.
